Optimised order picking in narrow aisles

Task

An automobile manufacturer wants to optimise the picking of orders in the manual spare parts warehouse. The worker should be able to assemble spare parts for several orders in one operation. The aisles in the warehouse are very narrow with a maximum width of 800 mm. Therefore, a material trolley is required that is very compact and can hold up to 5 transport boxes. The boxes can weigh a maximum of 30 kg each and must be accessible from the worker's position at the trolley handle.

Solution from mk

A transport trolley for stacking boxes in the shape of a Ferris wheel was constructed from Series 40 aluminium profiles. Four boxes can be hung on a vertically mounted turnstile. The worker can turn the wheel using a hand crank so that the required box is always within easy reach. A gearbox with a chain drive ensures that the gear ratio is sufficient to turn the wheel easily without excessive force. Another transport box can be positioned in the footwell of the trolley. With a width of approx. 600 mm, the trolley is so narrow that it can be easily pushed through the aisles of the warehouse.
