Back in 2019 a customer purchased a balancing stand for vacuum pumps from mk, which it has used in the meantime to set down and balance rotors. In this process, the pump rotors turn at a couple of thousand revolutions per minute. Faulty or incorrectly balanced pumps can result in the balancing stand being subjected to massive amounts of torque. The balancing stand itself had to be sturdy with that in mind, and was constructed from Series 60 profiles and large-format Series 40 profiles.
Now, five years later, the customer has added a new series of pumps to its portfolio that no longer fit the existing balancing stand. That means that either a new balancing stand has to be acquired or the existing one needs retrofitting.
mk was able to take the existing balancing stand and retrofit it to meet the new requirements. Thanks to their compatibility with the other required products from the mk profile construction kit, the construction designs were simple to modify. With the old CAD documents and the expertise at hand as a basis, mk managed to carry out the retrofitting with ease. The design of the original stand meant that only a few parts in the construction had to be adapted. The solid frame did not require any changes, and only the pump mounting had to be converted to the new series. There was also now an opportunity to improve the ergonomics of the stand. Instead of the folding cover that previously closed in the pumps for balancing, a sliding hood has now been fitted. This hood can be moved into the correct position manually using a linear guide. It is supported by two pneumatic springs that make it easier to move.
By retaining around 80% of the original system, the retrofit saved the customer a five-figure amount in comparison to a new build.
