Ergonomic mounting support optimises pump handling in the pharmaceutical industry

Task

A manufacturer of pharmaceutical products needed mounting support in the set-up process within its filling systems. The manual assembly of two components of reciprocating pumps, consisting of a male and a female unit, had to be optimised. This work step previously required a high degree of precision, as the components tend to tilt when they are brought together if they are not precisely aligned.

In addition, the weight of around 10 kilograms per unit represented a considerable physical load for the employees. Having to simultaneously hold, position and precisely align the components resulted in ergonomically unfavourable working conditions and posed risks of process errors and component damage.

The aim was therefore to simplify the insertion process with a suitable technical solution, make it reproducible and relieve the strain on employees in the long term.

Solution from mk

To meet these requirements, a mobile guide carriage was developed and designed for joining the components. This is based on a stable frame made of Series 50 aluminium profiles, which can be used flexibly at different locations thanks to its swivel casters.

The main function is performed by a VST 2011 linear adjusting unit, with which the two pump components can be precisely aligned and brought together in a controlled manner. It is operated manually using a handwheel.

Workpiece holders made of plastic (POM) are mounted on the slide carriage to ensure that the components are taken up securely. These make sure that the components are held firmly in place and protect their surfaces at the same time. The adjusting unit was also specifically modified to permanently withstand the chemicals in the cleaning agents used.

Benefits for the customer

  • Significant reduction in physical strain on employees during the set-up process
  • No need to manually lift the pumps when installing them in the machine
  • High process reliability thanks to precise and tilt-free joining
  • Gentle handling reduces the risk of component damage
  • More efficient and reproducible assembly processes
