Compact buffer solution with integrated cooling lubricant return

Task

In the CNC production facility of an automobile manufacturer, turned parts are automatically ejected from the lathe after machining. Due to the high machining speeds and the intensive use of cooling lubricant, the parts are heavily wetted with oil. The next work step requires intermediate buffering, during which the parts are to drip dry as much as possible. The cooling lubricant that flows off is to be efficiently returned to the lathe circuit in order to minimise the consumption of resources. For this purpose, a conveyor system is required that also adapts to the confined space conditions in the machine environment.

Solution from mk

To achieve this task, a GUF-P 2000 belt conveyor is directly connected to the lathe. The conveyor is fitted with a drip pan via which the dripping cooling lubricant is fed into the return process. Owing to the limited space, the drive is installed above the conveyor, making optimum use of the installation space.

At the end of the conveyor, the machined turned parts are transferred to a DT-P 2040 rotary table via a slide. This rotates at approx. 2 rpm and serves as a buffer station from which the parts are removed manually. This allows the workers to operate several machines in parallel without being permanently bound to one plant. During the intermediate storage, the components continue to drip dry so that they can be used for the subsequent process step.

The plate of the rotary table is made of perforated sheet, through which the excess oil passes into a plastic funnel underneath. Integrated guide channels direct the oil back into the coolant circuit of the lathe via a tube.

An additional drip pan in the lower area of the frame prevents possible contamination of the floor by leaking oil. The whole underframe is also designed to be mobile in order to ensure easy access to the lathe for maintenance work.

Customer benefits

  • Greater sustainability and cleanliness: The integrated drip and return technology keeps the working area clean and the cooling lubricant is fed into the circuit in a controlled manner.
  • Space-saving and low-maintenance solution: The compact design and the mobile underframe allow for optimal space utilisation and easy access for maintenance work.
  • More efficient machine operation: The buffer operation allows workers to operate several machines at the same time, thereby increasing productivity.
