Interlink for packaging line

Definition of the task

A medical products manufacturer requires an interlink for a packaging line for roll plasters.

A conveying path is required to serve as a feed to the packaging machine, which packs the plaster rolls into folding boxes. It also needs to be possible to buffer the plaster rolls on this conveying path. At the same time, there is a height difference to overcome here.

The customer also requires an interlink from this packaging machine to further processing. Here, the rolls, which have already been packed into folding boxes, are to be transported, labelled and then checked with a camera. Defective boxes are to be ejected by means of an NOK check. It must also be possible to create a passageway for forklift trucks with Euro pallets through the conveying path.

It needs to be possible to transport different formats on both lines – large and small plaster rolls, which in turn are packed into larger and smaller folding boxes. The dimensions of the folding cardboard boxes range from 50 mm to 100 mm, and a total weight of < 5 kg is expected on the conveying path. Low hygiene requirements must be met for the entire conveyor system.

Solution from mk

The Versaflex chain conveyor system was ideally suited for the feed to the packaging line. The plastic chain allows the products to be transported around curves, along straight lines and over inclines. The conveyor was equipped with serpentines to enable it to serve as a buffering section and in order to overcome the required height difference. Side rails guide the plaster rolls securely and prevent them from tipping over, both on the straight sections and in the curves.

Belt conveyors were used for the conveying path at the end of the line. The customer’s labelling and camera inspection stations are integrated within a tunnel. The products are stopped or clamped at the stations using pneumatic cylinders. In the NOK check, a pusher ejects defective boxes via a slide. The subsequent belt conveyor was fitted with a folding mechanism to allow forklifts to pass through. A stop switch triggers the emptying process of the conveyor. The folding boxes are stopped in front of the belt, the conveyor runs empty and then stops. The belt can then be folded up manually.

Rolling knife edges with a diameter of 12 mm were used to ensure a clean transfer of the products. In order to meet the required hygiene requirements, parts that come into contact with the product were designed accordingly, for example, side rails made of stainless steel. The required throughput was achieved at a speed of 12 m/min.
